Lucky me — I was in Singapore while the World Orchid Show was taking place at Marina Bay Sands. Having gone to the Chelsea Flower Show in London (which was a fabulous display of color) I suspected the orchid show might be a similar hothouse of visual stimuli. Suspicions confirmed! I spent several hours exploring the delicate colors, patterns and structures of endless orchids presented in small to tremendously large arrangements by people and orchids clubs from around the world.
I’ve never been a huge fan of orchids but since going to this show I have a new-found appreciation for their intricacies and the time spent in creating the abundant species (between 22,000 and 26,000) of this flowering plant. Their shapes are beautifully smooth, sensual, and at times overtly sexual (or is that just my perception? see photos and judge for yourself ). Their colors are spattered, sprayed, intense and fading. Viewed en masse at a show like this they take you in and beg for closer inspection — each flower itself a world of exquisite detail.
