I wandered into a surprising part of town today, just east of Arab street in a restored area of Kampong Glam. It’s so fun to find an oasis in the city! Lots more on that soon — including the Malay Heritage Center. Heading back to the Bugis MRT station, I walked toward Haji Lane and came across this scene — hookah pipes at full attention, ready for the evening in all sizes and colors. Hookah pipes are also known as shisha, and are common at bars and restaurants in Kampong Glam’s alcohol-free zone. Many places have carpets on the sidewalk where you can lounge and smoke with your friends into the evening. Flavored coals burn in the top and smoke is inhaled through the hose. They’re not healthy, but they sure are pretty!
