Weekly Photo Challenge: Letters
Walking through Tainan, I encountered a wishing tree. I’d never seen a wishing tree before, let alone a wishing tree of this size. Little wooden plaques hung all around its trunk. I can’t read Chinese so the individual and assembled letters were cryptic to me, but each plaque was scribbled with a wish to someone or something, somewhere — like letters sent from the post office of Hope & Thought.

The sign says “ruyi” or “as you wish”, referencing a sceptre in Chinese folklore that symbolized good fortune

I love that…”letters from the post office of Hope and Thought”. This is a lovely tradition.

This is so wonderful! There is something about not being able to read the wishes that makes the tree that much more special – mysterious. Almost like a secret wishing well or wishes upon a star, wishes when you blow the candles out on your birthday cake. There is something about wishes that almost lend themselves to privacy. Love it!

Yes! Isn’t it ironic??!?! An entire tree of public wishes and yet we can’t know any of them! Thanks for your astute observation.

Buongiorno Rochelle! Thanks so much for the kind words and for following me! Wow, that’s really cool that Maldives Dreamer named me as a favorite! Thanks for letting me know and for doing such a great interview with her. It’s really cool to connect with a blogger who has such passion for one specific place in the world. I hope to get to Maldives this year or next year since it’s only four hours from Singapore. Wow, Sicily! I’ve never been but my friends honeymooned there and had a lot to say about it. I look forward to reading more through your blog. Thanks so much for the comment and connection. Enjoy your weekend! ~Kelly

Sicily is a great place for a honeymoon, great food and plenty of romantic scenary.
Look forward to keeping on contact.

This is just magical! Being unable to read the language just adds to the pleasant surrealism of the scene.

Absolutely love this tree! I saw several similar things in Japan — places where people wrote wishes or their names and hung them in trees. But nothing this spectacular.

Yeah, I’ve never seen a tree like this one either! It was magical. So full of hope. We’re going to Japan on the 18th. Never been! Can’t wait! 🙂
