Today is Vesak, celebrating the birth of Buddha, so this morning I walked to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Auspicious timing! I came across a dragon at rest, looking longingly at its team, as if hoping to be brought to life with drums and dancing. Soon the team assembled, a drum was wheeled out and two lions leaped into place to begin the performance. The dragon came to life with fiery eyes, its head thrust into the air and on the move in pursuit of a symbolic pearl of wisdom. The dragon dance entered the temple’s courtyard, parading in circles and swirling in a giant corkscrew, spreading good luck to all.
