Autumn at Stanley and Pacific Spirit

The beauty of Stanley Park and Pacific Spirit Regional Park speaks silently. An entire season’s story unfolds in broad strokes of fall color knit with smaller discoveries like spider webs and mushrooms. Walking the quiet trails, it’s easy to imagine what the native landscape of Vancouver looked like a few hundred years ago when the Squamish and Musqueam people lived here on their traditional territories. Much has changed since then, but the golden hues of autumn remain and feeling tiny among tall trees surely holds as much magic for me as it has for every person who has ever explored these lands.

  • This is my favorite time of year – crisp, colorful and highly textured. Yes, P and I will be going there for sure…..

  • Beautiful photos, and words bring back memories of so many walks in both places. We are back home for a couple of months. Time to rediscover these, our favourite in-town hiking trails.

  • Kelly, what a fantastic eye you have to capture such beautiful detail! I love wood ears – and I can’t believe you found some autumn blackberries. Not sure how all the critters missed those in their preparations for winter. 🙂 ~Terri

  • Loved exploring Stanley Park when I visited Vancouver but in summer when everything, including those superlative trees shine in greenness. Absolutely love your capture of the mushrooms.

  • This is such a perfect time of the season to go out on a hike ~ see the colors, nature in its glory…and if you are lucky to find a blackberry or two to munch on 🙂 Great photos!

  • I’m trying to discover the difference between tags and categories, thought I’d look at your site to see what was what with them…I don’t see either listed? And found this post, which I never saw before!!! Love the shrooms on the log

    • I use tags for where I want a post to show up on WordPress (i.e. travel for the travel feed), and I use categories to organize posts within my blog (i.e. snow monkey post goes in travel or photography; if someone is searching “travel” on my blog, this post will be one that appears in the search results). To me, tags are way more important because they increase visibility and readership. Yeah, the shrooms are cool, huh? Such great parks to explore. Thanks for reading!

      • sooo then, category words don’t act as tags and lead people outside your blog to the blog? shoot

      • Pretty sure they don’t. They’re just organizers.

      • oh man!! so when I category something into Bali, it doesn’t get found in cyber space, only on my blog….no wonder nobody finds my blog

      • That’s my understanding of how categories work. Good news is… start tagging and you’ll soon have tons of new people finding you! 🙂

BUT…you’re gonna be proud of me. I finally made a decision, and purchased my air tickets.

      • Eeeee! So exciting! So, Maldives and Sri Lanka too then? Or did you decide on something un-Kellian?

        Like

      • Right. Maldives. I looked into Sri Lanka a little. Then, got tuned into this ashram in India, Kerala. And since I’ve never been to Kerala…and the air tickets worked out…Kerala it is. Beach, houseboat, ashram. Have you been to Kerala? If not…then yeah, un-Kellian. If yes…tell me what to do, please, Travel-Yoda.

      • Travel-Yoda! That one, I like. 🙂 I am SOOOO jealous of you going to Kerala! I almost went there before I left Singapore but I ran out of time. It’s been high on the list for months. I’m not surprised you’re going there. It looks amazing. And I just found out last night that a new Indian friend of mine grew up there. I cannot wait to read about your experience! Especially the houseboat part.

      • Kelly (aka Travel Yoda), yeah, I checked your site to see if you’d gone to Kerala, I don’t think I saw India at all…did I miss it? And I think kicking back on a houseboat should be pretty cool, eh? I need green around me for a while.

      • No, you didn’t miss it. India is a big gaping hole in my travels. I’ve held off going because I think it requires a substantial amount of time and stamina to see any meaningful amount of a country that size. I can’t wait for the day I get there — I have a feeling it will surpass all of my expectations in ways I never imagined. Yeah, houseboat should be fabulous to say the least. Totally jealous. But I’ll be soaking in an onsen after eating a hot bowl of ramen. Not a bad alternative. 🙂

  • oh…just found them up there, are they tags or categories??? or do both do the same thing? WP support documents are fairly unclear. I think I should take a job with them and clear up all their support sheets…

    • Mostly tags. I tend to only use one category per post and up to 10-15 tags per post. According to WP, if you tag with more than that, or with tags that don’t make sense with your content it can negatively affect your posts in their feeds. You can even be sidelined from WP feeds if you’re incorrectly tagging i.e. tagging a gardening post as “news” to get into a feed with more readers.

      • I wonder if I’ve been sidelined! I don’t think people find me. It seems I find them first, then they follow me. I guess it helps to be Freshly Pressed!! Can I find out if I’ve been sidelined? Can I pay a fine and get back in the game?
Are you whistling down Whistler? Break a leg…no wait, that’s only for theater.

      • No Whistler last weekend. Lots of work and a visit from a family member for American Thanksgiving. How many tags have you been using? A bunch? Yeah, I think you found me first. I remember thinking, who is this Badfish guy? 🙂 But I’ve noticed that we do read/write/run in the same circles of the blog-o-sphere.

      • Oh, right, you’re American/Worldlian. Turkey Day was just another work day here.
I use one or two categories, and up to 15 total tags and categories (WP limit), lately a few less. Should I use a category and a tag for, say, Bali posts, you think?

        Like

      • Sure, use both. If people search for Bali within your blog, all posts categorized as Bali will appear in the search results. Worldlian? Is that a Badfish word?

        Like

      • Worldlian…yah, Badfish term. Just like Kellian for stuff you do that I subsequently do. As in…my Kellian trip to the Maldives.
