Daily Dose of Beauty: To the Market
Daily Dose of Beauty: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together.
This series features travel photos and stories from my archives, shared with you as we shelter in place.

Today we’re visiting world markets!
Going to the local market is a highlight of any trip abroad or at home, not just for a look at the local foods and produce but also the local social scene. Markets are a place of connection, a time to catch up and share news, a way of earning a living while playing an integral part in sustaining the community.
From a grand bazaar to a tiny convenience store and everything in between, a market shows the essence and character of a place brought to life by the personalities within it. Pride and care shine through in meticulous displays, artistic arrangements and gratitude for happy customers.
Browse, shop, chat, smile and feel lucky if you’re someone’s first buyer of the day. The market is the beating heart and lifeblood of every community. Now more than ever, we understand this and thank everyone around the world doing their part and their best to keep the markets open.
Until tomorrow,
Kelly
The color, the life, the food— you’ve captured the feeling of markets, Kelly. And I liked your statement: “Pride and care shine through in meticulous displays, artistic arrangements and gratitude for happy customers. I am continually taken with the ‘meticulous displays and artistic arrangements.” Thanks. –Curt

Me too, Curt! I’m amazed at how beautiful fruit and vegetables can be! LOL. Funny but true.

Some of the vendors are true artists, Kelly. Or at least craftsmen. And I am reminded of how important presentation can be to the enjoyment of dining. –Curt

Happy to make your day, Andrew! The markets always make my day, too. I miss Granville Market. I should do a post just on that someday.

One of our favorite places to visit. It’s only 15 minutes walk away, not that I’m trying to make you jealous or anything 😊

Lucky you! 🙂 I loved catching the Aqua Bus from Yaletown (we lived at Homer and Robson) and putting on over for lunch or a bagel stop with some time wandering around the shops. Such a great spot in Vancouver. And Maiwa (the supply shop and textile school) is incredible, with deep connections to art and craft in India and beyond. I took quite a few classes there. Do you know of them? Try an indigo social when things get back to normal. Super fun, artistic and creative!

What a shame we never met for coffee. Maybe we should FaceTime one day 😊

I know! Would have been so fun to meet up while I was still there. We have lots of friends in Vancouver so I expect we’ll be back to visit within the next year or so. We’ll have to meet for dinner or something. Or FaceTime, too! I want to hear more about your journey from surgeon to painter.

Look forward to getting together when this is all over, in the meantime FaceTime it is 🙂

Wonderful photos that make me want to be there browsing through the stalls and just smiling at the vendors when I don’t know the language. A wonderful part of travel.

So true! Markets transcend any need for language. The spirit is universal and the needs are understood. Can’t wait for market days again.

Still lifes that aren’t so still. Nothing says character like an open-air market.
Interesting angle on that first shot. Was there a sky bridge, or have you learned to levitate in your travels?

Ooh, levitation would be such a fun skill! But no, I was just standing on a slightly precarious balcony in Havana as he passed by below me. Perfect vantage point!!
