Photos of the Day: Unawatuna
Photos of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together.
This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you as we shelter in place.

Following yesterday’s thoughts, I can already tell I’m not going to be very good at this “one photo a day” shorter format. There’s just too much beauty in the world! So here are a couple beach pics of the glorious golden sand of southern Sri Lanka, along with a funny sign spotted somewhere in Unawatuna that feels appropriate for these times:
SORRY!
UNIVERSE
CLOSED
USE
RAINBOW
May the 4th be with you!

It was! Only for like two nights. Would love to go back for a week. The southern beaches are gorgeous.

Interesting the photo of Unawatuna…it’s somewhat more built up now unfortunately… there is now a tall hotel building opposite where the people are sitting. Still underdeveloped compared with places like Cancun but it was still sad to see the recent changes to this gorgeous beach.

Oh, boo! That’s too bad. We saw a lot of destruction left from the tsunami, and were hopeful that some local people and businesses would recover. But mass development will surely change the character of this beach and not for the better. Happy we got there when we did.

There is just something about shooting a photo up a palm tree that I can never resist! All of my photos of tropical places have to have at least one.:) And you took a good one, Kelly. –Curt

Catching up on your posts going backwards 🙂
More fuel to get me to Sri Lanka. I think I could happily spend a month there – slow travel to all the places.

You can definitely slow travel there. We found the trains really enjoyable — a couple with incredible views of the jungle mountains heading into tea country. From there, we just asked around whenever we needed to get somewhere and managed to arrange transport fairly easily until our last day in Galle. From there we took the train back to Colombo. Another blogger (can’t remember who) mentioned hiring a van for the whole week they were there — was affordable and the driver was happy to go wherever they wanted and also acted as a tour guide for some of the more well known places they stopped. In any case, it’s a very accessible country and people are SO friendly.
