Photos of the Day: Signature Sri Lanka
Photos of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together.
This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you as we shelter in place.
May 9th, 2020
We’re wrapping up Sri Lanka with a handful of photos showing the country’s indelible beauty, color, character, elegance and pride. My memories of the time I spent here still make me smile, and I can’t wait to go back someday.
Tomorrow, we’re departing Sri Lanka and riding the magic carpet to a new location.
Until then,
Kelly

I’m drawn to the woman on her journey to pick tea leaves, and i think how difficult her work must be. Not so much in terms of figuring out something or heavy lifting, but just fighting the routine and sometimes the boredom. It’s a lot to take in, but your photos tell great stories!

Thank you SO much for your comment. The women working in the tea plantations put in long hours in the sun, carrying heavy loads. To your point, I’m sure the monotony is sometimes okay and at other times maddening. I have a handful of additional photos of the workers (mostly from the back) on their way into the hills. I wish I had taken more time to make contact. People in Sri Lanka are so friendly and I would have loved to capture their portraits. I think they would have enjoyed the exchange. This is something I’m working on as I travel — making those connections that allow you to show/share a life (and story) lived within our diverse world.

I love pictures of the people but I’m always hesitant to take them. In Morocco, the women would hide behind trees or buildings. They did NOT want their pictures made. Something about their spirits.
