Here we are, high above Paris at Montparnasse Tower. What I love most about these views is that they reveal the city’s characteristic design: wide boulevards, green spaces, mid-rise architecture with interior courtyards, and a panorama punctuated by notable buildings and landmarks reaching just a little bit higher. The Eiffel Tower commands the view looking north, lighting up just before dark.
In November/December 2018, I spent a month in Paris living, working remotely and walking through the neighborhoods. There was no agenda other than enjoying this city with everything it offers ~ art, food, wine, markets, coffee, croissants, pastries … joie de vivre.
We’ll explore more in the coming days and have a few pastries, too!
A bien tôt,
Kelly
P.S. Joyeux anniversaire, G&A! I know Paris holds special meaning for you, especially today. ♥

That’s a great and accurate description of Paris. Perhaps because the city was built without a master plan, over the centuries, through changing techniques, there is this composite aspect that finds its own harmony, its own balance that charms the eye that knows how to see. Merci.

Thank you! I love that the “composite aspect” as you say is never overwhelming. It’s a very explorable city in that way. Never overwhelming like New York City can be.

You made me really look at the architecture in a way I haven’t before, so I’m peering at the opening pic for inner courtyards, and for the first time actually noting that yes, the buildings are all mid-rise, there are no high-rises in Paris. It’s so obvious if you pay attention, or think about it. I guess I just never did. Great pics, especially that opening shot.

Thanks Alison! I was sitting, pondering, what it is about Paris vs. other cities that makes it so appealing and I think the mid-rise aspect combined with outdoor space plays a big part. Being up in this tower helped me see it too!

And today you’ve said what I said yesterday … that Paris is best with no agenda at all! How amazing to be able to live and work remotely there for a month!

It was a really fun month. We went out exploring during the days and then came home for early dinners as I dialed into work for the evening. The time difference worked out pretty well. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Nothing says Paris like slipping in the Eiffel Tower, Kelly. And the lack of towering high-rises that block the view. –Curt

It’s hard to think of a more iconic symbol in Paris or even the world!

Merci beaucoup mon ami!! Was just looking at your Paris posts this morning with Dru – it the place she most wants to visit – and saw your sweet message. Love seeing your beautiful photos. You’ll also appreciate that Dru picked up “1000 Places to See Before you Die” the other day and was flipping through it picking places to go one day. Love to you and J! xx

You were off to such a good start talking about the architecture, then you had to mention French pastries. How am I supposed to that out of my head? It’s like an earworm – for the tongue.
