Yosemite’s Ahwahnee Hotel
Post of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together.
This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
July 20th, 2020
Yosemite’s Ahwahnee Hotel is one of the great, historic lodges of the U.S. Built in 1927, its age and character speak through its timber construction, huge fireplaces, stained glass details and patterns painted throughout. The hotel displays many antique kilim rugs and baskets woven by Native American tribes of the region.
Wander through and I’ll see you tomorrow.
Until then,
Kelly
Thanks for the memories!

Cool! There’s not a bad place to stay in Yosemite. They all have their charm!

Oh, I love these big old lodge-y hotels! (And wow – what a backdrop to this one!) Actually, I usually love the common areas and the settings; the rooms are often a little long in the tooth! This reminds me of some of the historic places in Glacier National Park and also the spectacular Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, with its huge fireplaces. Cannot wait to see Yosemite someday.

Oooh, I don’t know of the Grove Park Inn! I’ll check it out! And I’ve never been to Glacier either, so thanks for the inspiration and new ideas!! I love a big old lodge anytime! 🙂

Had brunch there many years ago and looks like it hasn’t changed. A fabulous piece of parkitecture…

Parkitecture! I like it. Yes, it hasn’t changed — still just as beautiful as ever. Lucky you with brunch in the dining room! 🙂

The cool thing about the Ahwahnee is that yes, it is fancy, but it also feels SO down to earth. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

OK. You’ve ruined me. This is where I want to stay when I go to Yosemite! Nowhere else. Absolutely gorgeous, spacious, and commanding. Yesssssss!

Well, Rusha, for the discerning traveler there is no other option in Yosemite than the Ahwahnee. 🙂 Considering yourself not ruined, but enlightened, LOL! You will love it!

We’ve stayed at a couple of similar lodges in national parks and loved them. I’m glad this is my only option in Yosemite!!

I do have a backup, if needed, LOL! The Yosemite View Lodge is just outside the valley and not elegant by Ahwahnee standards but IS located right on the river so you can sleep to the sound of water and enjoy the river view from every room. 🙂 But I still vote for the Ahwahnee!

Great advice. Now if we can only get the coronavirus to subside so we can travel again.

I love the Ahwahnee, Kelly. Your gorgeous photos remind me of when we were there last.. We never stayed there but I enjoyed walking around inside and out and dreaming a little. When we saw it in 2016, I thought they renamed the hotel. The feds cut the third party contracts and renamed most of the valley’s attractions. A shame really.

Thank you, Terri! Nice to know we both share a love of the Ahwahnee. 🙂 Yes, the name changed a few years ago but somehow they’ve changed it back. I don’t know the details of what happened, but it is once again the Ahwahnee. So happy about that!!
