Wanaka View
August 8th, 2020
After our beach break in an unknown destination, it’s time for the reveal. We’re on the shoreline of Lake Wanaka in … New Zealand! I have a couple posts to share from this quiet and stunning country in the southern hemisphere, including one about a long-ago solo camping trip on the Abel Tasman Coast Trail.
Apologies for missing yesterday’s daily post! WordPress unexpectedly retired the theme for my blog so I’ve been rebuilding with a new one. (I’m not sure yet if I like it.)
More tomorrow!

Love the two ducks in the bottom right-hand corner. “Yeah, this is where we roll”. Jealous of them!

Yeah, they are lucky ducks!! “Just hanging out at this beautiful lake!” 🙂

I like the new design, it’s clear, clean and square. What doesn’t change fortunately is the quality of the content. I like the serene view of the lake.

Thank you, Lookoom! Appreciate your kind thoughts on the content and design. I kind of think the theme is too square. Lots of boxes and lines. Need to refine the colors a bit to reduce that effect.

Great shot. What a shock to have your theme retired. Did you get any warning? No problem of course for whatever the theme the content will always be what we’re visiting for, and you never disappoint 😊

Thanks, Andrew! NO warning at all. I just replied to Alison’s comment with the whole story if you care to read it! 🙂 You’re the best! Thanks for always being so supportive. It means so much. ♥

I love this photo and this place, although I’ve never been — only seen photos. Sorry you are starting over with a new theme. I am as well, but it’s a lot of trouble to revamp the old posts. Not impossible, of course. It just takes time.

Thanks, Rusha! Good luck with your new theme. It sure IS a lot of time and trouble to revamp the old posts. We’ll get there eventually. Cheers!

Gorgeous shot of gorgeous NZ!
I do hope they don’t retire my theme! Eeeeek!
What you have is looking good so far. Can you transfer everything over?

Thank you Alison! It was quite a surprise to find the entire top half of my blog missing. I thought I had been hacked but went looking for support in the WP forums and found (by accident) a note from a Happiness Engineer that my theme had been retired because it doesn’t conform with the new editor (which seems to be catering to new, inexperienced users). Wish they had warned me and other users ahead of time! I emailed for support and still have not heard back so I just went ahead and started making the transition. Everything has been reasonably easy but those of us with YEARS of posts (over 500!) have lots of things to feature and I went carefully and laboriously through SO many premium themes (the free ones are too basic) trying to find one that would pull in my main post categories and populate them with associated content. Sadly there were only a couple themes to choose from that do that, with some flexibility (not a set layout). So here I am… I’m back! But not entirely happy with the outcome. It’s VERY boxy. 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend!

I was hoping that I can transition to the new editor and then still keep using the classic editor. I don’t want to use the new block editor – not interested in presenting posts in blocks. I know the Gallivance, and now you have had your themes retired. I’m hoping that since I’ve heard/seen nothing and my blog is functioning as normal that they’re not retiring my theme. I’m using a modified version of Chateau. I think Lexie is using the same theme I’ll go check out hers and see if it’s still functioning. This looks pretty good Kelly, but it’s not good that you had so little choice.

Interesting. I didn’t know Gallivance had theirs retired too. I find the new and classic editors very confusing. I don’t even know which is which or when the new one officially took effect. I prefer the one with the black left-side menu, which I’ve been using from the start (so it must be the classic one). In any case, I agree about the block editor. Not interested. Hope your Chateau remains intact!! 🙂

Lexie is using the same theme as me and her blog hasn’t changed. Fingers crossed. I too prefer the classic editor with the black left-side menu and have never used anything else. I don’t think the new editor has taken over yet. From what I understand there will be the new editor (I think called the block editor) and the old block editor (which will be called classic block) and then there will still be the option to choose the classic editor which is the one we use. Hopefully it will be obvious enough when it happens. We just have to look out for the Classic Editor option.

The beauty of New Zealand is hard to beat Kelly! Way back in the early 90s I organized a thousand mile bike trek there. I was doing something else at the time of the trek but I went over and drove the route in advance. It was on the South Island. I’ve also taken two other month long visits to the North and South Islands. I could go back again and again! –Curt

Wow, all sound like fabulous experiences, Curt!! (Is there anywhere you haven’t been??) Agreed — New Zealand is such a special, scenic and serene country. And doing an admirable job fighting the pandemic, too.

Ah, there are lots of places you have been that I haven’t, Kelly. 🙂 But New Zealand is really special if you like scenic country and good folks. Now, admittedly, there aren’t too many places in the Sierra’s that I haven’t hiked through. –Curt
