South Island Landscapes
August 11th, 2020
I don’t know about you, but in these strange times I like to get out of the house and take a drive.
After the coastal views of last Thursday’s post, today I’m sharing a handful of photos of the inland landscape around New Zealand’s South Island. These photos were captured near Wanaka and Queenstown. New Zealand is a fantastic place for a road trip, with no shortage of stunning vistas and varied terrain. You can also see the country by ferry, train and bus which will take you just about anywhere you want to go.
More on that tomorrow when we revisit a little solo adventure I had nearly 20 years ago. Pack your tent and bring your tide table!
Until then,
Kelly
Post of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together. This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
Lovely pictures. Every time I see pictures of Queenstown I regret that I went so fast on my way down the west coast before heading to Stewart Island.

Love this post Kelly. NZ Sth Island left me speechless in 2017. My eldest son Scott & I travelled in a Winnebago for 3 weeks & was able to take a wonderful German lady backpacker (Anita) with us virtually free of charge. My #2 son Matt & his wife Ashlee had to pull out last minute so I was very lucky to have Anita join us. Her parents were thrilled we kept her safe. We did 3,524klms just on Sth Island. Loved it!!!

Wow, that’s a lot of kilometers!! Sounds like an amazing trip and how fun to see the country by Winnebago. A trip of a lifetime for sure! Thanks for sharing your experience, Brian. Hope you’re still healthy and doing well!

Such a breathtakingly beautiful country, and you captured them so well. Thanks for your wonderful blog Kelly, I am seeing so many places which I might have never seen otherwise.
Waiting for views from the tent 🙂

Thank you, Deb. I really appreciate YOUR appreciation of seeing these new places. I love blogging for that reason. It helps people see the world, realize we’re not that different from each other, and plants the seeds for future trips. The connections are so rewarding. Thanks again and so great to be virtually traveling together! I’m really enjoying reading/seeing your part of the world and days at home as well!

The South Island is a dream spot for a road trip, I agree! We drove two overstuffed vans of 4 adults and 6 kids all over the island for a couple of weeks one December – pure heaven! Well, except for all the pee stops for the 6 and 7-year olds … but they were the prettiest pee stops in the world! 🙂

Hahahahaha!!! Sounds like a typical road trip from the bathroom break perspective. How fun to drive for a couple of weeks! Lucky you! Were you hiking? Beaching it?

A bit of everything. Our friends and their 3 kids were living in Sydney, so we dragged our 3 to NZ and Australia for a very long trip one Christmas break. Jet boats, beaches, glacier hiking, cave exploring, hiking … so much active fun! We all will never forget it!

Lovely photos, Kelly! It’s hard not to get great scenery shots on the South Island. Right? 🙂 I remember being in a small town outside of Queenstown with a satellite phone talking to the New York Times. I had just published an article in the Tobacco Control Journal on how the tobacco industry managed to take advantage of Hollywood to push tobacco on kids that I had done in conjunction with UCSF. There was much scenery appreciation that day! Grin. The article was picked up by over a thousand media outlets worldwide. –Curt
