Above and Below
August 27th, 2020
Who doesn’t like a nice sunset? So here’s one more at low tide, captured when we got scuba certified on Tioman Island (and went by boat, not plane). Bonus shot below courtesy of a Kodak waterproof camera (amazing shot, huh?).
Tomorrow, we’re off to a different part of the world. We’ve visited this country before during my pandemic posts, but this time we’re doing something entirely different!
Until then,
Kelly
Photo of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together. This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
That’s very intriguing for tomorrow, but I guess there will be a nice story and good pictures.

Oh, I am so delighted! Not only familiar, but very related to this race. For years I followed the competition closely before discovering how the aerial images could be a free advertisement for France around the world. Thanks, it is a great idea.

Lovely sunset, and the underwater photo with those bubbles is so beautiful.
Scuba diving is a dream, we have some facilities near goa – don’t know how good those are though. Is it quite difficult to learn?

I was surprised actually. It was easier than I expected, although there are lessons taught out of the water that are quite technical (learning how long you can be underwater, time to decompress, ascend, etc.) but a good dive watch (or dive master) will do much of the math for you. It’s important to be a decent swimmer and comfortable in the water, but I think having a level head may be the most important quality in enjoying scuba diving. It requires focus, calm, awareness of breathing and ability to remember all the steps to get down and back up (which becomes natural after a while). If you already have those qualities (and I suspect you do based on your writing and thoughts) you would enjoy it. Give it a try if you have the chance! Plus, you don’t have to become an “advanced” certified diver. I’m quite happy staying not too far from the surface, exploring reefs and stuff like that, knowing that if I need to surface quickly, I can.

Thank you so much for such fantastic details, that goes a lot towards understanding what is involved. I plan it for my daughter and me, not sure she qualifies at her age, otherwise it’s going to be snorkeling for us. Both available near Goa. And I am not very adventurous, I would honestly be freaked out by ocean depths. Yes, just being able to dip in a bit and witness that Marine life which we normally see in Nat Geo is salvation enough for me 🙂

Hey, snorkeling is a great way to start and gauge her interest, and get comfortable in the water too. There’s also “snuba” which is kind of in between scuba and snorkeling, but probably harder to find a facility where you can try it.

Yes, snorkelling should be a good start, I checked and they don’t mention snuba. That place is also good for dolphin sighting. Thanks so much Kelly 🙂, those suggestions help a lot to decide, esp. as you already experienced diving.
