Photo of the Day: Spooky Canyon

Spooky Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

October 15th, 2020

It’s been a long, fun day. We left camp at 4:30 a.m. to catch the stars and sunrise at Bryce Canyon, then packed up and moved on to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This area is big, requiring a bit of driving to get to the good stuff, so we rattled down a dusty dirt road for 25 miles to hike Peek-a-Boo and Spooky slot canyons. What an adventure! The canyons are curvaceous, eroded by water and wind, and so narrow in some places it’s like a full-body jigsaw puzzle trying to fit through.

Spooky Canyon was especially pretty with its color and texture as you can see in the photo. I shot the five-mile trek with an iPhone rather than my Nikon as it would have been too precarious slotting through while juggling equipment. Full post coming soon!

More tomorrow,
