Grand Canyon: Ooh Aah to O’Neill Butte
December 8th, 2020
After yesterday’s jaunt, we’re continuing on the South Kaibab Trail towards O’Neill Butte. A few scrubby trees and bushes cling to the rocky spine we’re navigating. It looks as if the trail ends in the open space above the canyon but it twists to the right and drops down to the next layer where the canyon opens up to the east.
We reach O’Neill Butte, a landmark looming in the distance since we started the hike. Somehow it feels both big and small — towering above us yet a mere bump on the map of the vast Grand Canyon. Moving past it, the next stretch to Skeleton Point appears as a thin red line reaching from left to right along the plateau.
Enjoy the gradual downhill. Tomorrow we’ll reach Skeleton Point and the most precarious bit of the South Kaibab Trail.
See you then,
Kelly
Post of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together. This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
I like this descent, the hike should be just the descent. There are always the gyms to work out. It would be wonderful to enjoy the scenery without the stress.

Great open spaces, these wonderful photos fill me with awe at the huge openness around – sitting inside the walls right now as I am especially. There is so much land around that is seen, at the same time it’s not monotonous like plains look from top of a hill.
One could just pack their sandwiches and beverages and loose count of time here 😇

A mere speck on the landscape! It is the most awe inspiring place 🙂 🙂

Some of those layered views are just gorgeous! I am also imagining the amount of red dust on your hiking shoes/boots! (I have to clean my shoes every night on a trek – weirdo, I know – and the red dust is always the worst!)

Yes! The red dust. We were filthy by the end of the hike. I like your ritual of cleaning your shoes — sets you up for the next day. My favorite is always when it’s all over and I can scrub my feet in a hot shower. 🙂
