Travel Challenge Day Three: Canada
January 12th, 2021
Here we are, folks. Day three of the Travel Challenge! Today we’re in British Columbia, Canada at Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
One of the tenets of of the Travel Challenge is that you don’t have to explain why your chosen photo is a favorite. But I’m going to tell you anyway! (I bet you saw that coming.) I love the reflections in this photo, the contrast slicing through the middle and the layered composition from the sky to the mountains to the bottom of the lake. It takes a few seconds to figure out what you’re looking at and make sense of the abstraction. If you need a little help, another view of Middle Joffre Lake follows below.
We’ll continue the challenge tomorrow from… Cuba.
Until then,
Kelly
Photo of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together. This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
That’s right, it’s hard to understand what is in the picture at first sight. It’s smart to play with the misleading intuition of the spectator’s eye.

Yes, it was strange to see the light and reflection in person too. A fun photo for everyone to inspect. 🙂

Wow, it is lovely, but I am unable to see what you are explaining. 🙃🌞🙃

It’s a strange photo, I know. The mountains across the lake were making the top reflection (upside down). The clouds were also reflecting in the lower half of the photo but the bottom of the lake was visible too. So many confusing layers and shapes!

Yes, a strange, layered composition. Loved the abstraction and knew you would too!

I take a lot of reflection photos, Kelly. Some are a realistic reflection of what you see, others are more abstract. Your see-through perspective adds another dimension. Good job. –Curt

Thanks, Curt! Definitely an added dimension. I stood there for a while and thought about how strange it all looked. 🙂

I wander around the reflections looking for both angles and subject matter. Even rain puddles draw my attention! One of the things I love to do, Kelly, is capture reflections that create totem pole-like figures because of the symmetry. –Curt

I’m trying to envision these totem pole-like figures… 🙂 Sounds like a fun pursuit!

My all time favorite is from the 4-Q lakes in the Desolation Wilderness, which you have probably been to. I looked for a post that would feature it but couldn’t find it. Here’s one reflecting a bug, if you will, from the Five Lakes basin north of I-80. Scroll down. It’s close to the bottom: http://wandering-through-time-and-place.com/2017/08/22/

WOW! That’s a fantastic photo! It took me some time to figure out what I was looking at. It does look like a bug! Amazing that the water was so still and PERFECTLY reflective. Excellent shot, Curt! Thanks for sharing.

Welcome. Next time I come across the 4-Q lake reflection, I’ll be sure to send it to you, Kelly.

And also, I still can’t tell which side of the photo is the landscape and which side is the reflection!

I was seeing many travel challenges lately, but I don’t like the not explaining part. I certainly knew your post – if you would have the explanations for the photograph, thanks Kelly 🙂
And the first picture is very abstract, truely, and very interesting!
