Portugal’s Pousadas

March 14th, 2021

I’ve got a little secret for you today.

It’s been a fun week full of posts from Lisbon and southern Portugal. If you’re inspired and thinking about a visit to the country, I hope you’ll consider Portugal’s Pousadas when booking your accommodations.

Pestana operates the website for Portugals’ pousadas which are “monument and historic hotels.” Their collection of 33 pousadas includes former convents (one of which is shown above), monasteries, castles, palaces and historic properties.

We discovered the pousadas when we ventured to Sagres and stayed overnight at Pousada Sagres. Located at the cliff edge with a direct view to Fortaleza de Sagres, we were astonished to enjoy such an affordable night here. Had it been warmer and with a pool like that (pictured below), we would have stayed much longer!

Prices are affordable, architecture is stunning, and it’s a bit of a treat to be enveloped by history in a pousada. We walked through several during our trip but had already booked most of our accommodations, otherwise we would have definitely spent a few more nights in these authentic hotels.

Just one more reason to love Portugal!

More tomorrow,
