Tiny Island Escape
March 24th, 2021
Today… a tiny island escape, more in images than words.
Phu Quoc, off the southwest coast of Vietnam, welcomed us with fresh juice, cool towels smelling of lemongrass, colorful fishing boats, deftly cut pineapple, cold beer and a motorbike ride on the rusty red dirt roads along the coast. It was a quick and simple beach getaway to get away from Typhoon Megi approaching northern Vietnam.
More tomorrow from not too far away,
Kelly
Post of the Day: Adding a bit of light to the darkness as we get through the pandemic together. This series features travel photos from my archives, shared with you while staying close to home.
P.S. In case you missed it yesterday, here’s the sunset from Phu Quoc.
Looks a great get away, will meep it in mind for when we manage to get back to Vietnam. Love the brightly coloured boats at the waters edge.

Yeah, it was nice for pure relaxation. Not much else going on when we were there. Don’t you love it when the boats come in for the day? So pretty. Happy weekend to you both!

Phu Quoc, isn’t it a more developed island with several tourist attractions?

Maybe it is now? We were there in 2010 and there were only two or three places to stay and very little going on where we were. Only a handful of tourists which was nice.

Sorry to ask :-), but are you sure of the name? A Vietnamese-Canadian friend of mine went to Phú Quốc two years ago and showed me pictures of a more active island.

Yes, same place. I just flew over the island with Google maps and found where we stayed based on the shape of the pool compared to my photos. We stayed at what is now La Veranda Resort. At the time, it was quite fancy (for the area) and there was hardly anything around it except a few shops along the road, and nothing when we drove the motorbike south. It looks like things have changed dramatically since we were there.

It’s interesting, the recent development is really dramatic and has transformed the peaceful lives of the people you met. Thanks for answering my curiosity.

You’re welcome! I’m not sure if it’s better or worse for the residents of Phu Quoc. It had been such a sleepy place. Many fishermen there. Maybe they’re making a better living now, but with Covid the tourism has surely gone away as this island is so far off the beaten path.

I think the main stream of tourism now comes from China, as well as the money that has built marinas and theme parks.
