Post Number 365

April 6th, 2021

The day has come. Today’s post is number 365! The magic carpet has landed for refueling.

I never expected I would still be writing daily posts one year after the pandemic started. I began the journey expecting we’d all be traveling again by the end of summer… then the holidays… then spring… and here we are, with the virus raging again, and new variants amid vaccinations.

In the past year we’ve virtually visited Maldives, Bella Coola, Philippines, Borneo, Goa, Spain, Singapore (many times), Lake Tahoe (also many times), Oman, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Sulawesi, Paris, Bhutan, Myanmar, Cuba, Yosemite, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, Tioman Island, Annecy, London, Yucatan Peninsula, Vancouver, Death Valley, Lake Powell, Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Bali, Luxembourg, Wiesbaden, Strasbourg, Nuremburg, Morocco, Bangkok, Cambodia, Yogyakarta, Portugal, Yukon Territory and Vietnam.

We’ve explored the Gathering of Nations, Thaipusam and the Tour de France. We’ve seen snow monkeys, played in the snow and celebrated Chinese New Year. We’ve enjoyed mooncakes, moonsets and hot air balloons over Reno, and we’ve savored many virtual escapes to beaches around the world (including yesterday’s) to placate our desire to travel again.

I’m going to take the next few weeks off from posting but will still be reading and commenting. I hope to return with some new local stories and images from wherever I can get to safely, while also knowing and respecting that it’s going to take the world a long time to build immunity at the current rate of vaccination. I saw this estimate* yesterday:

Time to 75% vaccination at the current rate:
U.S. – 3 months
Chile – 4 months
U.K. – 5 months
Canada – 10 months
Brazil – 10 months
E.U. – 1 year
China – 1.1 years
World – 1.8 years
Russia – 1.9 years
South Africa >10 years

We’re in it for the long haul, together. I hope more countries cooperate, share technology and send vaccines to those in need. Humanity may be our most expedient remedy.

Thank you all for reading, commenting and coming along for the journey of 365 posts! I’m grateful we’ve made it this far.

Please stay safe and healthy, and I’ll see you in a few weeks!
Kelly

  • What an epic flight Kelly, amazing journeys in the times of no travel – the fireworks are just right for the occasion.
Have a nice break, refuel, be safe and I will wait for the next take off 🙂

  • I have looked forward with anticipation to your daily posts and also in awe that you stuck with your plan to dig through your archives to post 365 posts in almost that many days, Kelly.

There had to have been periods when you wanted to just chuck it all in but you persevered and we, your readers, were the undeniable winners as a result.

I also wish you peace and a chance to refuel before you begin sharing your adventures again.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones until we virtually meet again.

  • This was a tour de force on your part and a year-long treat for us. The way you described the inexorable pileup of pandemic days was so apt … I remember (foolishly) thinking we might be able to gather for Easter last year, then set our sights on a summer burnout of the virus, then surely our daughter’s fall wedding would be OK!, and on and on. Of course, none of it came to pass, but now I do feel we are tentatively stepping into an open future, and as we do, you will enjoy a little extra time for other pastimes! Thanks for the ride!

  • Wow, I’m grateful to see the 3 month statistic for the US but saddened to see the numbers for the rest of the world. I too hope we can collectively help everyone worldwide get vaccinated and bring this pandemic to an end 🤞🏻

  • Congratulations on your 365 posts, Kelly. What a challenge! I’ve loved the tour and look forward to continuing to travel with you. 🙂 Always fun, interesting and educational.
Hopefully, as soon as the US achieves its objective, it will use its great production capacity to help the rest of the world battle the pandemic. What an important goal and great message that would be.
Thanks again for your contributions to the blogging world. Now, go play for a few weeks. –Curt

  • I can’t tell you how much I admire what you have done. It’s one thing to write a post once a week or so, but everyday takes diligence beyond belief! Thanks for your lovely shots and commentaries — I truly feel that I have traveled the world with you. And loved it all. You are fortunate to have seen so many places, and perhaps even more fortunate that you are talented in the areas of photography and writing. Your sensitivity toward others in various parts of the country have endeared you and your blog to us. Best wishes for some time off, a good rest, and a renewal. We’ll look forward to seeing you after your break.
Thanks again for a year of world travel through your eyes!

  • Just had my travels to China and Vietnam cancelled, although I was not surprised so it is not a huge disappointment. It is strange having not seen many of the people I work with for almost two years. Missing the East, and especially it’s been 18 months since I last step foot in my HK flat. However, like you, this will be ridden out and new experiences will be had 🙂 Enjoy your autumn and wishing you all well.
