About Me

I was born in Montana, raised in the mountains of Colorado and found my true home in Lake Tahoe, California. Mountains are in my soul — a place where I’ll always feel at home.

My love of travel began on my first trip to Europe in 1997. My father and I went to Paris. We looked at the art, ate so many pastries and ran around in the winter weather in disbelief that we were in such a magnificent city.

In 1999, I took a road less traveled and went to Peru to trek to Machu Picchu. It was my first trip to a developing country. Returning to the U.S. after this trip resulted in a major epiphany about the random luck of being born in what’s often regarded as the richest, most powerful country in the world. I began to question my definition of happiness in the context of the world, rather than within the standards and measurements of the U.S. Had I not traveled outside the U.S., I would never have seen or evaluated my life from this new perspective so I regard this trip as a major turning point in my life. It lit the fire. It left me with a lot of curiosity and questions about the world. I haven’t stopped traveling since.

In 2012, I left the mountains and moved to Singapore with my husband, who had accepted a position with a world-renowned visual effects studio. This significant change in our lives presented me with a unique opportunity to transition my career as a creative director from full-time work in an office to remote work from anywhere in the world. This was life-changing for me and, with new freedom and lots of new places to explore, I started Compass & Camera.

More important than where I’ve been or what I’ve done is what I’ve learned while traveling. I’ve learned that I don’t need much to be happy; that beauty, happiness and good people are everywhere; that a smile is the greatest currency; and that a thank you or even just a look in the eye and a nod of the head can go a very long way. I see you.

I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures — from the discoveries of everyday walks through my neighborhood, to more elaborate journeys exploring culture, history and life around the world. My dream trips for 2023 include Egypt, Jordan, Mongolia, maybe a return to Bangkok or Sri Lanka, and hopefully a few other places I haven’t discovered yet. I hope you’ll keep reading and come along with me. There is so much to explore.

Cheers,
Kelly     Kelly Heapy

Human Family
By Maya Angelou

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.

I’ve sailed upon the seven seas
and stopped in every land,
I’ve seen the wonders of the world
not yet one common man.

I know ten thousand women
called Jane and Mary Jane,
but I’ve not seen any two
who really were the same.

Mirror twins are different
although their features jibe,
and lovers think quite different thoughts
while lying side by side.

We love and lose in China,
we weep on England’s moors,
and laugh and moan in Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish shores.

We seek success in Finland,
are born and die in Maine.
In minor ways we differ,
in major we’re the same.

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

  • Kelly, I just received this and of course you and Jay were the first people I had to send it on to, for the dancing and the great editing.
Loved all the photos of door and windows, two of my favorite things to photograph. When Patti and I went to France I think that half of all my photos are of doors and windows.
    Sandy,
    Enjoy!
Hollywood’s Greatest Stars and The Bee Gee’s!!!!

Somebody had a lot of fun with this. Most of the people in the clips were deceased before the Bee Gee’s recorded “Stayin’ Alive.” The Bee Gee’s or Rita Hayworth fan or not…you are going to love this! Most people don’t know what a great dancer Rita Hayworth was. It shows one thing; music may change but the dance moves are timeless.

I’ve spent money I didn’t have, squeezed in trips between jobs, missed some holidays with family, etc. but I wouldn’t trade my memories, stories and photographs for anything. • Ah, once the travel bug bites, you’re addicted. Travel has been an integral part of my life. I can’t imagine not having seen the wonderful places in this world that I’ve been lucky to venture to, from the time I was a little girl.

I really enjoyed reading this. You hit the nail on the head about the simplicity of happiness – it really is all around us, and within us. I think most of us tend to look in all the wrong places for it, when it could be staring us right in the face. It’s just a matter of being open enough to let it come in. When you travel to different places and immerse yourself in different cultures, you enjoy such a vastly rich experience that it’s hard to imagine the world as how you have always known it. You suddenly realize just how dynamic it is, and how much of it is still left unexplored!

I see you live in Singapore now? I have lived there for a considerable part of my young-woman-hood. I have very fond memories of my time there. 🙂

I’m looking forward to reading your entries!

It is profoundly life-changing to get out and see the world, particularly if you can see the beauty and happiness in even the small, supposedly mundane parts of life.

Yes, I currently live in Singapore – it’s been almost one year and I love it. Where in Singapore did you live? Let me know if you ever return – we could meet for some kopi and kaya toast!

  • Hi Kelly! I’m a friend of Patti’s. She brought you to my house in LOP for July 4th festivities many years back. I’ve been blogging about our RV travels and my adjustment to life after the loss of Mike. I would like to raise my blogging to the next level, and wonder if you have any input on that subject? I’m not sure where to start, except to enjoy you blog!

    Like

    • Denise! So great to hear from you. I’m very sorry to hear that Mike passed away, and sorry for the loss you’re experiencing as well. I was just reading some of your blog posts and I can feel the love you have for him. I admire your desire to keep traveling and exploring life. I see you’ve been blogging for quite some time! With regard to taking your blog to the next level, have you considered moving your blog to WordPress? That probably sounds like a monumental task (which it probably is) but I can’t say enough good things about the community I’ve found through the WordPress platform. It’s SO supportive and I’ve made quite a few friends who I keep in touch with and meet in person whenever possible. WordPress also has lots of ways to enhance your blogging (daily writing and weekly photo challenges) and grow your audience (all the tools they offer in the dashboard to monitor your stats, increase your exposure, etc.). Aside from moving over to WordPress, I would say to just continue writing from the heart and look for places to share your blog (i.e. BlogHer, etc.). Also, maybe focus on writing after experiencing loss, or life after losing a partner, or creating a new phase in your life. There are so many people who can relate to those topics and I find it’s better to dive deep into one category (travel, for me) than write generally about a lot of different things. Most importantly, write what YOU know. No one can do that better than you. Hope this helps? Please let me know if you have more questions! Thanks so much for getting in touch! xo, Kelly

      • We will DEFINITELY hit you up for some Colombia details when we eventually get there. It’s been on the list for a few years now. We were so close to visiting in April of 2017 but we heard the rains can be really heavy and make land travel difficult. (We went to Portugal instead.) The other two locations we’ve most talked about are Tibet and Egypt. Mongolia is up there, too. I have a major birthday coming up later this year … thought we’d get to Egypt and maybe Jordan, but we’re probably going to have to stay in the US. Possibly doing a rim-to-rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon. I may post that idea soon and see what feedback I get! And I need to start training. Thanks so much for the offer to meet up in Colombia! We’d love to. 🙂

    • Hey, Gilda! Thank you! Wonderful to connect. Always happy to have more people join in my journeys around the world. Since no one is traveling during the pandemic, I’ve been sharing archived stories and photos every day since March 15th. Hope you enjoy having a look around at old and new content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ~Kelly
