We arrived in Sri Lanka late on a Friday night, unable to see the country’s landscape from the windows of the plane. All discoveries of geographic color and contour would have to wait for daylight, and would be revealed over the next ten days as we traveled west to east, then south, and back to our starting point in Colombo.

Yesterday’s morning safari began with a beautiful sunrise behind big cumulus clouds on the eastern horizon. We were on the road at 5:30 a.m., and the park was awake with activity. We climbed Adam’s Peak Monday morning — a 3:00 a.m. departure, a gradual climb into the hills and then a grueling staircase for the last couple of kilometers. We opted for a lie-in rather than climbing Adam’s Peak last night. It’s supposed to be a vacation, after all.
